New significant dwelling and equestrian facilities near Wantage

A'Bear & Ball Architects LLP has been working on a project on ‘The Ridgeway’ near Wantage that includes a large circa 4,000 sqft replacement dwelling with outbuildings and equestrian facilities.

Planning Permission Granted

As the lead architect, we helped Mark Doodes Planning obtain Planning Permission from the Vale of White Horse District Council in December 2019 for a replacement farmhouse and a range of new outbuildings including a machinery barn, hay barn and stables.

Considering its sensitive rural setting, we focused on creating a distinctive design for the farmhouse, capturing far reaching views and having a low carbon footprint. With its location in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it was also especially important to produce a design that respected the surrounding landscape.

Re-invented Modern Design

The design of the house has barn references and incorporates glass and a range of other materials to create a modern and individual style. Features include a frameless glass bay window and part sedum grass roofs.

In order to respect its scenic location, we have designed the glazing to avoid light pollution into the AONB, while still ensuring the windows and setting of the house take advantage of the scenic views over open countryside to the south.

Since planning permission was granted at the end of 2019, we have prepared full construction information and specifications for the works. The project is currently out to tender and it is expected that the works will progress to construction in the summer. A’Bear and Ball Architects LLP will be retained as Contract Administrators to oversee the build, which is anticipated to take around 12 months.

A’Bear & Ball Architects offer considerable experience with producing contemporary design concepts for homes and buildings in sensitive locations including Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and can help clients through the entire process from conception to construction and handover.
