Planning permission secured for another barn conversion

A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP is excited to share that Planning Permission was recently granted by the Vale of White Horse District Council for our barn conversion scheme near Childrey, Oxfordshire!

This scheme involves a contemporary conversion of a large modern steel framed portal barn to a single dwelling with 405 m2 (4,360 sqft) of floor space over two levels plus a triple-bay new-build detached garage.

The design of the barn conversion

It was important that the layout and external elevations respected the building’s former agricultural character with the amount and location of glazing having been given careful consideration.

Areas of the plan have been recessed to provide covered entrance and terrace/balcony areas, with the first-floor overhangs providing controlled solar shading to the larger areas of ground floor glazing below.

The roof will be reclad in an anthracite grey standing seam metal, with minimal interruptions allowing the converted barn to sit in an unassuming manner in the wider agricultural/rural context.

The reuse of the client’s existing ground mounted PV array combined with a highly efficient/insulated building fabric and building services will ensure energy demand for the ongoing running of the dwelling will be kept very low.

A growing track record

As the lead architect, we worked closely alongside Walsingham Planning and our client in developing the scheme to a successful planning conclusion.

We look forward to assisting our client with the detail design and implementation stages of the project in the near future and are excited to see this barn conversion built out in due course!

At A’Bear & Ball Architects, we have a growing track record of designing and delivering barn conversions across Oxfordshire and the wider region and have more schemes currently in the works.

The Practice has extensive experience designing sympathetic barn conversions to ensure the original character and setting of the sites and wider localities are preserved.
