A’Bear and Ball Architects LLP has been shortlisted for two Build It Awards

A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP has made it onto the shortlist for two categories at the 2020 Build It Awards. The Practice has been shortlisted for the Best Architect or Designer for a Renovation or Extension Project for Chapel House and the Best Timber Frame Home for Bolero Gardens.

The Build It Awards are the most sought-after honour within the self-build industry and are a celebration of the best self-build and renovation projects, products and services. We are so thrilled to have been shortlisted in two categories this year!

Best Architect or Designer for a Renovation or Extension Project | Chapel House

The Practice’s work on Chapel House, which included a full refurbishment, extension and alterations of a 19th century Methodist chapel, was shortlisted in Build It Award’s Best Architect or Designer for a Renovation or Extension Project category.

For this project, the former low-quality extension was removed in order to reveal the original period detailing. The ultra-modern cedar and metal clad extension creates a clear distinction between the old red brick building and the new contemporary structure, and there is a glazed link connecting the old and new spaces. The home was also fully restored internally; it was important for the ecclesiastical detailing and original chapel features to be enhanced throughout.

In the shortlist, Build It highlighted Chapel House for the clever use of rooflines and architecture detailing, the improved thermal performance of the house through ample insulation and the 85m2 of additional space the extension created, which helped produce a great floor plan.

The winner of this prestigious award will be chosen by combining scores from an expert judging panel and online voters. Voting is open until noon on 12 November. Please vote for A’Bear & Ball Architects for the Best Architect for a Renovation or Extension Project.

Best Timber Frame Home | Bolero Gardens

A’Bear & Ball Architects has also been nominated in Build It Award’s Best Timber Frame Home category for Bolero Gardens in Graven Hill. For this project, A’Bear & Ball Architects was commissioned up to RIBA Stage 4 (Construction Information), and the construction was undertaken by MBC Timber Frame.

This contemporary self-build home meets Lifetime Home Standards and has a low energy design. With a timber frame, the house is heavily insulated and takes full advantage of solar gain to help heat the building throughout the winter months. The building envelope achieves Passivhaus levels of thermal performance. Additionally, an incorporated mechanical ventilation system helps keep the building comfortable with high levels of air quality.

Please head over to Build It’s website and vote for A’Bear & Ball Architects for the Best Architect or Designer for a Renovation or Extension Project. Voting ends at noon on 12 November. Winners of the Build It Awards will be announced in a ceremony on 27 November.
