Construction on Shrivenham Sports Pavilion set to commence in the spring

Construction on the Shrivenham Sports Pavilion is expected to start in late April 2021 with completion planned before the end of the year. The contractor, PJE Builders, has been instructed to undertake the work.

Despite the current uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, this fantastic community project is being brought forward by Shrivenham Parish Council. As an expanding village, the new Shrivenham Sports Pavilion will provide accessible sporting and community facilities for the growing local community. Since 2014, planning permission has been granted for more than 800 new houses in Shrivenham. And as 50% of that housing has already been built out, there is a need for more facilities than Memorial Hall can offer in the heart of the village.

The new sports pavilion is intended to be used by all the exercise and sporting activities currently accommodated in the Memorial Hall and will provide much needed upgraded changing facilities for the local cricket team. This will free up more space in the Memorial Hall for other community purposes and events in the future.

Design of the Shrivenham Sports Pavilion

A’Bear & Ball Architects was commissioned by Shrivenham Parish Council to design the Shrivenham Sports Pavilion. The modern design of the building includes traditional materials, which matches the Grade II Listed Memorial Hall and respects its sensitive location in the Conservation Area.

The Shrivenham Sports Pavilion has been designed with flexible usage in mind. There will be space for a range of indoor sports activities, including indoor cricket, soft tennis, judo, pilates, table tennis and short mat bowls. It will also provide outdoor changing and social facilities for the local cricket club. Additionally, the main hall of the pavilion will be suitable for other community activities.

The Chair of Shrivenham Parish Council comments: “The brief was tricky because of the need to maximize the year round requirements of the community together with providing a bespoke cricket facility for the summer months, all within the constraints of a very tight budget.”

Planning permission and construction details

Local firm A’Bear & Ball Architects delivered full architectural services under RIBA Stages 1 – 4 for the Shrivenham Sports Pavilion. This included the preparation and submission of drawings to the Vale of White Horse District Council for pre-application scrutiny and then for full planning permission.

After planning permission was granted, A’Bear & Ball Architects then prepared full detailed design information for tender and construction purposes, while also obtaining Building Regulations Approval for the works.

The project underwent months of detailed design development. A’Bear & Ball Architects co-ordinated the input of various third-party specialist consultants and worked closely with Shrivenham Parish Council to develop the detailed specification for the construction of the building.

As a local Shrivenham-based practice, we are thrilled construction is commencing on this project soon and look forward to seeing the sports pavilion built out and used by the local community.
