75 Milton Road

75 Milton Road is a self-build chalet style replacement dwelling that took the place of a former bungalow in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire. It was designed by A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP and is a reinterpretation of the traditional bungalow on the street scene.

With this project, the Practice wanted to create a unique design that still meshed with the other properties in the area, especially as the property fronts the main high street. Because of this, A’Bear & Ball Architects incorporated construction materials found in the local area, such as an off-white through-coloured render and grey concrete roof tiles with accents of metal cladding.

The gable on the front façade is what makes this project unique over and above other properties in the street scene but is subservient enough to not be too over-dominant. The development was constructed of a well-insulated traditional masonry fabric, which has vastly increased thermal efficiency over the original dwelling, and Passivhaus principles were adopted.

A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP carried out the Planning and Construction Information for the scheme. No support was required at the Build Stage as the client was an experienced builder by trade, and he took on the entire build on his own with no labour costs. The Practice was shortlisted for the Best Architect or Designer for a Self Build Project and Best Self Build for Under £250k for Milton Road at the 2021 Build It Awards.
