A’Bear and Ball Architects were appointed to provide Building Regulations compliance information for this self-build project, replacing an outdated chalet bungalow on a stunning rural site in Hambleden. The team later supported the client during construction to bring this carefully detailed, 170 sqm modern home to life.

The house’s angular design and hipped zinc roof create a striking silhouette, balancing contemporary aesthetics with sensitivity to its natural surroundings. Clad in warm timber with intricate flint detailing, the building blends traditional materials with modern craftsmanship, offering a timeless yet forward-thinking design.

To complement the architecture, the landscaping features a thoughtfully curated mix of soft and hard elements. A tranquil pond and native planting merge seamlessly into the rolling countryside, while strategically placed paths and terraces enhance functionality and enjoyment of the outdoor spaces.

Designed to the rigorous Passivhaus Standard, the home exemplifies energy efficiency, with high-performance insulation and air-tight construction. Natural materials and low-VOC finishes promote a healthy indoor environment, reflecting the client’s focus on sustainable and wellness-oriented living.

Large windows frame panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, filling the interior with natural light while reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Inside, a carefully planned layout emphasizes spatial flow and comfort, showcasing the architect’s commitment to modern living and precise detailing.
