Whitehouse

A’Bear & Ball Architects LLP designed a replacement farmhouse of 4,000 sqft on ‘The Ridgeway’ near Wantage, Oxfordshire. As the lead architect, we worked with Mark Doodes Planning to secure Planning Permission from the Vale of White Horse District Council in December 2019.

The design of the house has barn references and incorporates glass and a range of materials to create a modern and truly individual style. There are unique features, like a frameless glass bay window and part sedum grass roofs. The design also looks to capture far reaching views and has a low carbon footprint.

With the house’s location in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Practice designed the glazing to avoid light pollution into the AONB and to respect the surrounding landscape. A’Bear & Ball Architects also designed a number of new outbuildings and equestrian facilities, including a machinery barn, hay barn and stables, on the site.

The Practice prepared full construction information and specifications for the works. We were also retained as Contract Administrators to oversee the build. Construction has completed. We have been shortlisted for the Best Architect or Designer for a Self Build Project and Best Brick Home at the 2022 Build It Awards for Whitehouse Farm.
